Summer Concerts


Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department brings you the 2008 Summer Concert Series' - the Thursday Brown Bag Concerts and the Wednesday Lawrence City Band Concerts. Concert cancellation and/or other information when there is inclement weather please listen to 1320 AM KLWN for information.

Lawrence City Band

The Lawrence City Band, sponsored by LPRD with assistance from the Rice Foundation, will present this annual concert series every Wednesday night beginning at 8 p.m. at the William Kelly Bandstand in historic South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. There is no charge to attend - it is free and open to the public. The band is conducted by Robert Foster. The Following is the concert schedule and the theme for the evenings music:

  • May 28 - Season Opener
  • June 4 - Classics for a Summer Night
  • June 11 - Lawrence City Band Showcase
  • June 18 - Col. Arnald G. Gabriel, USAF ret., Guest Conductor
  • June 25 - Children's Concert
  • July 2 - A Star-Spangled Spectacular
  • July 9 - From Kansas City to New York to Vienna
  • July 16 - 2008 Season Finale


Brown Bag Concerts

LPRD and Downtown Lawrence, Inc., will agina co-sponsor the free summer concert series on Thursdays at Noon in front of the U.S. Bank building, 900 Massachusetts St. Bring your lunch and enjoy the music. In the event of inclement weather, the concert will be moved to the Watkins Community Museum, 1047 Massachusetts St. The concert series is free and open to the public.

  • June 19 - Key West Jazz Quartet
  • June 26 - Two Much Fun
  • July 3 - Borderline Country
  • July 10 - Lonnie Ray Blues Band
  • July 17 - Billy Elbing & the Late For Dinner Band
  • July 24 - Paul Gray
  • July 31 - Alfred Packer Memorial String Band
