Friday, September 21, 2007ROTARY ARBORETUM OPEN HOUSE PLANNED
LAWRENCE – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department, along with the City of Lawrence Utilities Department, Lawrence Rotary Clubs and the Friends of the Arboretum will hold Experience the Rotary Arboretum Day 8 a.m. to 12 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 29, at the Lawrence Rotary Arboretum, 5100 W. 27th St.
This demonstration day is designed for the public to learn more about gardening methods and to experience the educational opportunities the arboretum exhibits. The majority of events will take place after 9 a.m. once the fun run is completed.
Included in the day’s activities is a leisure run, a garden tour, youth bug hunt, demonstrations, a dedication for the installation of a bench, a talk regarding Kansas wildflowers and grasses, a tour of the Xeriscape Garden and discussion of installation of appropriate plants for a given site. Tree seedlings will also be given away.
The following is a detailed schedule of events:
8 a.m. Check-in for Arboretum Run
Leisure, non-timed run on the trail running through the Rotary Arboretum.
9:15 a.m. Xeriscape Garden Tour
Emily Nolting, Kansas State University horticulture department, will provide insight to the method of gardening, which involves selecting plants appropriate for their site and are maintained with little water. This tour/talk will be repeated at 11:15 a.m.
9:40 a.m. Youth Bug Hunt
Conducted by the Lawrence High School National Honor Society volunteers. The event will be repeated at 11:35 a.m.
9:40 a.m. On-Going Activities
Visit booths regarding stormwater, water quality, compost, tree pruning demo, Xeriscape Garden tour and other topics.
10 a.m. Rotary Bench Dedication
A short ceremony will be conducted to dedicate the newest edition to the Rotary Arboretum, a bench donated by the Lawrence Rotary clubs.
10:15 a.m. Wildflowers and Grasses of Kansas
Mike Haddock, KSU science librarian, will conduct a short talk on the native flowers and grasses of Kansas.
11:45 a.m. Tree Give Away
Lawrence Parks and Recreation’s Horticulture Division, along with Stradders Daughters and the KSU Forest Service will provide free seedlings for individuals to take home and plant.
