Wednesday, October 17, 2007SESQUICENTENNIAL POINT DEDICATION UPCOMING
LAWRENCE – The dedication of Sesquicentennial Point will be held at 4 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 24. The ceremony will be at The Point, located at 6000 W. 27th St., which is located on the City’s leased property from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers. The public is invited to attend.
The dedication is being organized by the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department and members of the Sesquicentennial Commission, which was operational from 1999 to 2007. The Sesquicentennial Commission planned the community sesquicentennial celebration in 2004 and led the fundraising efforts for The Point’s development. During the period, the group raised more than $200,000 in private support of The Point.
The Point includes a plaza area near the top of the hill overlooking Clinton Lake and the Wakarusa Valley. A walkway of engraved steps, the “Walk through Time,” stair steps down the hill to the point where a time capsule was placed in 2004 commemorating the 150th anniversary of Lawrence’s founding.
The dedication of The Point will include a tribute to donors of the site and those who purchased steps in the “Walk through Time.” Descendants of Amos Lawrence, the founder of Lawrence, will also be on hand and will present a book detailing the genealogy of the John Lawrence family to Sherry Williams, curator of the Kansas Collection at the Spencer Research Library.
Members of the Sesquicentennial Commission: Clenece Hills, president; Mary Burchill, chairperson of the Horizons Committee; Bruce Roberts, secretary and William Crowe, treasurer, as well as Parks and Recreation staff will provide comments regarding The Point’s development from idea to reality. Mayor Sue Hack will provide closing remarks, finalizing the dedication. Junkyard Jazz will provide music.
In the event of inclement weather, the dedication will be held on Friday Nov. 2, at 4 p.m.
Steps may still be purchased in the “Walk through Time.” For more information, please contact Roger Steinbrock, marketing supervisor for Parks and Recreation, at 832-3450.
