Wednesday, May 21, 2008ENROLLMENT IN SUMMER CAMP PROGRAMMING ON-GOING
LAWRENCE–Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department is offering a wide-variety of summer camps for children throughout the summer.
The long-running, tradition-rich Summer Playgrounds is being offered at seven sites this summer. Sites include: Deerfield Park, Princeton and Arrowhead Streets; Edgewood Park, Maple Lane and Miller Drive; Holcom Park, 27th Street and Lawrence Avenue; Prairie Park, 27th St. and Harper Avenue; Quail Run Elementary School, 1130 Inverness Dr.; South Park, 1141 Massachusetts St. and Sunflower Elementary School, 2521 Inverness Dr. Summer Playgrounds is open to children ages 5 to 12 years old and runs Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to noon and 1 to 4 p.m. with options of two-week and four-week sessions throughout June and July. A variety of activities, games and trips are done throughout the camp. Cost is $125 for the four-week session and $68 for two-weekly sessions.
Mini-Munchkin Camp is being offered for children 4 to 6 years old, which is designed for preschoolers and kindergarteners. It is designed to stimulate children’s imaginations and creativity while developing socialization skills and encouraging independence in a fun environment. The camp runs 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, weekly throughout June and July. Each week has activities centered around a given theme and includes games, stories, crafts, dances and guest speakers. Cost is $50 per week. Participants also receive a t-shirt.
Wet-N-Wild Aquatic Camp is being offered for children ages 5 to 12 years old. It is being held 8 a.m. to noon Monday through Thursday, May 27-30; Monday through Friday, July 21-25; July 28-Aug. 1 and Aug. 4-8. Cost is $45 for the Monday through Thursday camp and $55 for the Monday through Friday camp. Participants will learn swimming techniques and have water safety instruction. Healthy snacks will be provided each day and on the last day of camp participants will celebrate with a pizza party. Snacks are included in the fee.
Two-Day Golf Camp is offered for beginner and advanced juniors, ages 11 to 17 years old. There is also a pee-wee camp for children ages 6 to 10 years old. The beginning junior camp will meet 8 to 10 a.m. and the pee wee camp will meet 10:30 -11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 4-5; June 25-26; July 9-10 and July 23-24. The advanced junior camp will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 3-4 and Sept. 17-18.
Friday Explorers is offered to children ages 5to 12 years old and those 13 to 21 years old. The program is fully integrated for those with and without disabilities. Weekly trips include visits to the Topeka Zoo; Old Prairie Town at Ward Mead Park and Lake Shawnee; Combat Air and National Guard Museums, Theater for Young America at Union Station and Planetarium in Kansas City and the Coterie Theater and Kaleidoscope at Crown Center in Kansas City. Program runs every Friday beginning June 4, except July 4, through July 25. Cost is $25 per participant per week.
Other camps include: the Unified Day Camp, Tennis Camp, Gymnastics Camp, Rocket Camp, NASA Camp and a variety of science and nature camps.
