AVAILABILITY IN WEEKLY SUMMER CAMPS REMAIN
LAWRENCE –Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department still has a wide-variety of weekly summer camps for children with space remaining.

Prairie Park Nature Center has a number of science camps with space remaining. All of the following science camps run from 9 a.m. to noon Monday through Friday and costs $45 for each weekly program.

WWW.ANIMALS is being offered for children ages 6 to 11 years old. The camp runs June 23-27 and July 14-18. The camp will introduce students to the animals at the nature center. They will learn about their habitats, what they eat, and how nature designs them for survival.

Spineless Creatures is open to children ages 6 to 12 years old. The camp runs July 7-11and will provide children an understanding of tough, spineless creatures. Children will create an insect collection, eat like a bird and create many bug crafts.

Fabulously Feathered is open to children ages 7 to 13 years old. The camp runs July 21-25. Children will learn how birds fly, what feathers are like and what it means to “eat like a bird.” They will also learn how birds adapt to a wide variety of habitats and lifestyles. Participants will build a birdhouse.

Endangered Means There Is Still Time is open to children ages 7 to 13 years old. The camp runs July 28-Aug. 1. Children will learn what challenges wildlife face today to survive. From poisons in their environment to global warming, children will learn what steps can be taken to help animals survive in their natural habitat.

Prairie Park Nature Center also has a number of adventure camps with space remaining. Adventure camps run 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday and costs $70 for each weekly program.

Wildlife Adventures is open to children ages 8 to 12 years old. The camp runs June 23-27. Children will learn to identify animals from the tracks they leave, read wildlife signs and find where animals live outdoors. Identification of snakes, bugs and birds will also be covered, as well as why habitat conservation is so important in protecting wildlife.

Surviving the Wild is open to children ages 7 to 11 years old (Section D) and 8 to 12 year old (Section E). The camp runs July 7-11 (Section D) and July 14-18 (Section D). Children will learn to become an outdoor survivor by learning a variety of outdoor skills, including: tying knots, navigation with map and compass, cooking outdoors and how to avoid poisonous things.

Ecochallenges is open to children ages 8 to 13 years old and runs July 21-25. The camp will feature a number of outdoor games designed to test a child’s outdoor IQ. Children will team together for daily challenges.

Science Adventures is open to children ages 8 to 12 years old and runs July 28-Aug. 1. Children will explore the bizarre side of science with weird science experiments, like bending water with electricity making rockets out of balloons or film canisters and making bones bend. Canoeing will also be conducted.

Another weekly camp being offered is Mini-Munchkin Camp. It is open to children 4 to 6 years old and is designed for preschoolers and kindergarteners. It will stimulate children’s imaginations and creativity while developing socialization skills and encouraging independence in a fun environment. The camp runs 8:30-11:30 a.m. Monday through Friday, weekly throughout June and July. Each week has activities centered on a given theme and includes games, stories, crafts, dances and guest speakers. Cost is $50 per week. Participants also receive a t-shirt. Wet-N-Wild Aquatic Camp is being offered for children ages 5 to 12 years old. It is being held 8 a.m. to Noon Monday through Friday, July 21-25; July 28-Aug. 1 and Aug. 4-8. Cost is $55. Participants will learn swimming techniques and have water safety instruction. Healthy snacks will be provided each day and on the last day of camp participants will celebrate with a pizza party. Snacks are included in the fee.

There are also a two-day camp and one-day trips also available.

Two-Day Golf Camp is offered for beginner and advanced juniors, ages 11 to 17 years old. There is also a pee-wee camp for children ages 6 to 10 years old. The beginning junior camp will meet 8 to 10 a.m. and the pee wee camp will meet 10:30 -11:30 a.m. Wednesday and Thursday, June 4-5; June 25-26; July 9-10 and July 23-24. The advanced junior camp will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Wednesday and Thursday, Sept. 3-4 and Sept. 17-18.

Friday Explorers is offered to children ages 5to 12 years old and those 13 to 21 years old. The program is fully integrated for those with and without disabilities. Weekly trips include visits to the Topeka Zoo; Old Prairie Town at Ward Mead Park and Lake Shawnee; Combat Air and National Guard Museums, Theater for Young America at Union Station and Planetarium in Kansas City and the Coterie Theater and Kaleidoscope at Crown Center in Kansas City. Program runs every Friday beginning June 4, except July 4, through July 25. Cost is $25 per participant per week.
