LAWRENCE -Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department's Eagle Bend Golf Course and Learning Center, 1250 E. 902 Rd., is turning ten years old next week.
Since Eagle Bend opened in July 1998, over 319,400 rounds have been played at the course. When it first opened only 9 holes were available for play during the first three months of operation.
Over the years, Eagle Bend has gained notoriety because of its challenging play and the natural setting, as well as the wildlife that can be seen daily around the course. It also became a member of the Audubon Cooperative Sanctuary program for golf courses, helping to preserve wildlife's environment and habitat.
In 2003, Eagle Bend was ranked as one of the top three golf courses in the State of Kansas by the Kansas City Star and has been named several times by Golf Digest to its annual "Places to Play" list. In April 2005, Eagle Bend played host to the Future's Golf Classic, which is part of the Futures Tour, the official developmental tour of the Ladies Professional Golf Association.
Eagle Bend has made modifications to the course over the years. In June 2003, a short-game practice area was created to work with irons only. A year later, additional tee boxes were added to accommodate junior golfers, creating Junior Bend.
Enhancements continue to be made to the course to make a golfer's visit more enjoyable. A switch to a more warm-season grass, Zoysia, has begun, which will stand up to the hot Kansas summers, keeping fairways from deteriorating from the heat. New forward tee boxes have been planned to accommodate beginning golfers, eliminating holes playing too long.
In celebration of the anniversary, pricing will be reduced next Thursday on the date of its dedication, July 3, for one day only. Walking rates for 9 holes will be $9.75; walking rates for 18 holes will be $15; 9 holes with a cart will be $17.25 and 18 holes with a cart will be $25.
