ARCHERY CLASSES BEING DEVELOPED
LAWRENCE – Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department’s Prairie Park Nature Center is developing a new archery program and will be the first nature center in the state to have certified instructors through the National Archery in the Schools program.

Nature center staff have been developing an area for an archery range and will begin instructing courses later this month.

Archery as a Sport is being offered for children ages 7 to 14 years old. Classes will run from 10 a.m. to noon on the following dates: Monday, June 23; Tuesday, June 24; Thursday, June 26; Tuesday, July 1; Monday, July 7; Tuesday, July 8; Thursday, July 10; Monday, July 14; Tuesday, July 15 and Friday, July 18. Each two-hour class will feature instruction using compound bows. Participants will learn the basics of archery, including safety protocols, stance, position, aiming and follow through from certified instructors. Cost is $10 per class.

Archery for Teens will be offered for children ages 13 to 19 years old. Classes will run from 10 a.m. to noon on the following dates: Thursday, July 3 and Thursday, July 17. Each two-hour class will feature instruction by certified instructors using compound bows. Participants will learn archery’s basic safety protocols, stance, position, aiming and follow through. Cost is $10 per class.

Enrollment can be done online at www.lprd.org or at any Parks and Recreation facility, including: the Community Building, 115 West 11th St.; East Lawrence Recreation Center, 1245 East 15th St.; Holcom Park Recreation Center, 2700 West 27th St.; Lawrence Indoor Aquatic Center, 4706 Overland Dr.; Prairie Park Nature Center, 2730 Harper St.; the Administrative Offices, 947 New Hampshire St. or South Park Recreation Center, 1141 Massachusetts St.

The department has photographic records of the department offering archery in the 1940s but doesn’t know how long the program ran or in what capacity the classes were offered.
