DeVictor Park
The images to the right detail the plans created by Landplan Engineering for the Lawrence Parks and Recreation Department for the development of a future park located north of 15th St. and George Williams Way and east of Langston Hughes Elementary School. The Master Plan was presented in the City Manager's Report at the May 31, 2005, City Commission Meeting. Previously, at the April 12 meeting of the Parks and Recreation Advisory Board it was approved by the board for future development, which has West Lawrence Neighborhood Association endorsement. This project is one of several on the list for consideration for the 2006 CIP Budget.
Public input was gathered from two public meetings held at Langston Hughes Elementary School. The meetings were organized by Parks and Recreation and the West Lawrence Neighborhood Association.
The first meeting was held in late November to gather input from the public about what type of facilities and features they would like to see developed in the future park.
The follow up meeting in mid-December was to elicit feedback on preliminary concepts for the park's features and usage.
As a result of the two meetings, the images on the right outline and detail the features and usage of the park area.
Features include:
- Native Grass Area with a berm to screen the park from residents at the southern end of the park area
- Mowed Grass Area
- Picnic Tables
- Benches Along the Trail
- Playground
- An Outdoor Classroom Area
- Water Fountain
- A trail throughout the park and around the "greenbelt" area.
On March 15, 2007, at the public retirement reception for longtime Director of Parks and Recreation Fred DeVictor, it was announced the park would be named DeVictor Park in his honor for his 37 years of service to the City of Lawrence.
