COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

Learn To Swim Programs
Lawrence Parks & Recreation Aquatics Division is excited to offer swimming instruction to individuals from pre-school through adult. Classes are offered throughout the year at the Carl Knox Natatorium and the Indoor Aquatic Center. Classes meet for 40 minutes and are taught by certified American Red Cross Water Safety Instructors.

Parent-Child (6 month to 3 years): This course is designed to familiarize children with the water. Course goal is not to teach the child to swim but to get them used to the water, including jumping in the pool. The parent does not have to know how to swim, but should be comfortable in the water.

Level 1 (Ages 4-5 years): Water exploration, learn elementary skills to build as they progress through the Learn-to-Swim Program: such as floating and kicking on front and back, alternating arm action, and safety skills.

Level 2: Primary Skills - students learn basic stroke skills, including front and back crawl and flutter kick with finning and safety skills.

Level 3: Stroke Readiness - students build on aquatic skills presented in Level 2. Guided practice in the front crawl, back crawl, elementary backstroke, diving from side of the pool, safety and rescue skills.

Level 4: Stroke Development - students develop confidence and competency in stroke, safety and rescue skills learned in previous levels. Learn the basics of the breaststroke, sidestroke, turns, treading water, and rescue breathing.

Level 5: Stroke Refinement - students coordinate and refine key strokes and are introduced to the butterfly, open turns, feet first surface dives and springboard diving.

Level 6: Swimming and Skill Proficiency- refines the strokes to swim with ease, efficiency, power and smoothness over greater distances. Level 6 is designed with options for preparing for advanced courses. The options include personal water safety, lifeguard readiness, fundamentals of diving and fitness swimming.

Junior Swim Designed to accommodate ages 9-16 interested in levels 1-6. Classes grouped to allow learning at his/her own level. Instructional class, lap swimming not permitted.

Adults: Designed to accommodate all adults interested in Levels 1 to 4. Classes grouped to allow learning at his/her own level. Instructional class, lap swimming not permitted!

Adaptive: Class for mentally handicapped and physically disabled youth and adults.
